FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) - All Scholarship Essays

A simple guide to help you understand every essay in the JCHS Alumni & Community Foundation Scholarship Application.

Aloha Scholarship Applicant,

We know writing multiple essays can feel overwhelming, so this FAQ is here to make things easier. Below you’ll find clear answers to the most common questions students have about the Foundation Essay and all Legacy Scholarship Essays. Use this guide to stay organized, avoid mistakes, and submit your essays correctly.

Need help? Email admin@jchsalumni.org — we’re here for you.

1. Do I have to write the Foundation Essay?

Yes. Every applicant must complete the Foundation Essay. It is required for the Foundation Scholarship and all Legacy Scholarships. If you skip it, you will be ineligible for every scholarship.

2. Why is the Foundation Essay required for all scholarships?

It serves as your main essay and helps reviewers understand your background, goals, and motivation. Legacy Scholarships build on this foundation.

3. Do Legacy Scholarships have their own essays?

Yes. Each Legacy Scholarship has its own essay question or prompt. If you apply for multiple Legacy Scholarships, you must write each essay separately.

4. What format should ALL essays follow?

All essays — Foundation and Legacies — must be:

- In paragraph format

- No bullet points or numbered lists

- No emojis or special characters

- In complete sentences

- Word count ** Foundation: 800 words max ** Most Legacy Scholarships: 800 words max ** PTSA Scholarship: 500 words max

5. How do I submit my essays?

You can submit your essays in one of two ways:

Option A: Copy/paste your essay directly into the form

Option B: Upload your essay in the Upload Documents section

If you upload your essay, type “Uploaded in Documents” in the essay box.

6. Can I write my essay in Word or Google Docs first?

Yes — and we recommend it. Writing your essay in another program helps you:

- Check your word count

- Avoid formatting issues

- Save your work safely

- Proofread before submitting

- Then copy/paste or upload your final version.

7. What if I applied last year?

If you applied for the Foundation Scholarship in a previous year, you must choose a different Foundation Essay question this time. If you’re not sure which one you used, email us — we can check for you. -

8. What happens if I don’t meet the word count?

Your essay may be considered incomplete or may not fully answer the prompt. Aim to stay within the required word count to ensure a strong, complete submission.

9. What happens if I answer “NO” to a requirement for a Legacy Scholarship?

You can still complete your Foundation Essay, but you will not be able to submit the Legacy Essay until all requirements for that scholarship are met. Once you complete the missing requirement, return to the Essay component and submit your essay.

10. Can I apply for multiple Legacy Scholarships?

Yes! As long as you meet the requirements for each one, you can apply for as many Legacy Scholarships as you want. Just remember: each Legacy Scholarship requires its own essay.

11. When is the deadline for all essays?

All essays — Foundation and Legacy — must be submitted by March 31, 2027. No extensions are available.

12. Who can help me if I’m confused about an essay?

Email us at admin@jchsalumni.org. We’re happy to answer questions, check your eligibility, or help you understand a prompt.

The scholarship components are Google Form links for the 2027 JCHS Alumni & Community Foundation Scholarship Program. Each form serves a different part of the application process.

Please review the instructions carefully and complete every form that applies to you. You will receive an email copy of your responses after each submission. This emailed copy will help you confirm your eligibility, track which Legacy Scholarships you qualify for, and ensure you complete all required sections.
